Types of Vaping: DTL and MTL?
If you’re reading this, you will hopefully agree with me when I say vaping is great: the health benefits, the reduced cost in comparison to smoking, the tasty flavours (and nice smelling homes because of them, as most of you tell us!), being just a few of the reasons. And because it’s so great, over the past few years we’ve seen the industry get bigger and bigger with people joining in all over the world, and will hopefully continue to see it grow in the coming years.
As a result of this though, I guarantee if you were to go home every evening, get comfy on the sofa with a cup of tea, or a beer (depending on how your day has been), and check your Facebook news feed; you’d see a new tank, mod or device that you’ve never heard of before. Now, I’m not saying this is a bad thing. If anything, it’s great as there really is a device out there that works for everyone - but it isn’t as simple as it once was, to understand what you need and why.
The two styles of vaping you really should know about are MTL and DTL to ensure you’re using your device properly, and if you’re on the hunt for a new updated version, you have at least the slightest idea on what to go for.
MTL - Mouth to Lung
MTL is the style that is the most similar to smoking a cigarette, which is why a lot of beginner kits are MTL devices or contain MTL tanks, such as the Aspire Zelos 2.0 Kit. They’re perfect for people who are trying to quit smoking but prefer a process that’s alike, but loads of people do it whether they’re new or old to vaping, including myself a lot of the time!
What to use: The most compatible e-liquid to use are those with a higher PG ratio, so for example 50VG/50PG. As well as eliquid with a higher PG amount, MTL devices are the best devices to use if you’re using a nicotine content above 6mg, or nicotine salt eliquid.
How to: When you vape MTL, you take a steady draw into the mouth (a bit longer than the usual draw on a cigarette). You then inhale the vapour from your mouth into your lungs, taking in air at the same time, and exhale.
DTL - Direct to Lung
DTL is a lot different to MTL vaping, which is important to note as you’ll come to realise it’s a completely new way of inhaling and not very similar to smoking a cigarette at all. When I’m DTL vaping, I tend to use the Freemax Meshpro Tank and any box mod that goes up to 100W - very different to the average 15-20W used when MTL vaping. People who tend to use this style of vaping are usually more experienced, or want a lot of vapour production.
What to use: The best eliquids to use with this vaping style are higher VG eliquids, with 70VG/30PG being the most popular. Generally, you also want your eliquid to have a nicotine content of less than 6mg, otherwise it will be extremely harsh every time you inhale.
How to: When vaping DTL, you take a draw directly to your lungs, for a few seconds but slowly (similar to simply breathing in), and then exhale.
I’ve mentioned before in regards to eliquid, but it applies here too - you don’t have to vape the same way other people do. Different styles work differently for everyone. It’s always great to have the disposable income to play around with a variety of products so you can really nail what works best for you - but if you’re trying to save money like the majority of us, the above ‘guidelines’ should hopefully help you out a little bit when making a decision for your next, or your first vape-related purchase.
